Compare

Aulacoseira lirata has a thicker mantle with coarse areolae, a deep ringleist and the valve face has a single row of marginal areolae.

Aulacoseira samariana has a deep ringleist, smooth valve face, and long, tapered spines.

Aulacoseira perglabra var. floriniae superficially resembles A. newjerseyana, but A. perglabra var. floriniae lacks areolae near the collum and ringleist.

Aulacoseira periphytica has a deep ringleist, smaller size, rounded inner mantle walls, blunt spines, and coarse areolae on the valve face. This taxon was described from karstic wetlands in Mexico.
