Aulacoseira italica differs from other Aulacoseria species by is its left curving (sinistrorse) or almost straight rows of mantle areolae. It is similar to A. valida by cell size and proportions and by the shape and size of the spines, but A. valida has rows of mantle areolae strongly curved to the right. Mantle areolae of A. italica are narrower and more slit-like, while areolae of A. valida are more rectangular and become larger near the valve face.
