Aulacoseira nivaloides, when observed in the valve view, can be confused with A. pusilla, A. nivalis and A. tenella. All of these taxa possess areolae on the valve face, but A. nivaloides differs by a strongly convex or concave valve face. Valve face areolae are much larger in A. nivalis and rather faint in A. pusilla. The spines are much shorter in A. tenella than in A. nivaloides. In girdle view, A. nivaloides is similar to A. nygardii, which has, however, a flat plain valve face and, usually, a higher row density of mantle areolae. The rows of mantle areolae in A. pusilla and A. alpigena are usually curved, while they are straight in A. nivaloides.
