Vegetative cells of C. teres are nearly indistinguishable from those of C. lauderi. Examination of resting spores is necessary to differentiate the two taxa. The primary valve of the resting spore of C. teres is smooth while that of C. lauderi is spinose. The setae of C. teres are generally shorter (about one half the length) and finer. Chaetoceros lauderi generally occurs in warmer waters both geographically and seasonally than C. teres.
