Cymbella hantzschiana lacks isolated stigmata, while C. vulgata has only a single isolated stigma. Cymbella neocistula and C. proxima have larger, more defined central areas. Cymbella lange-bertalotii has a larger central area, stigmata are more separated from the median ventral striae and the raphe is lateral.
