Compare

Cymbella vulgata is similar in shape and overlaps in size range, but differs in stria density (9-11 at the valve center, up to 14 near apices). Cymbella cymbiformis has larger valves, a lower stria density, and may possess two or more isolated stigmata. Cymbella excisiformis has more distinct areolae.
