Encyonema latum is larger than E. nicafei in size and known only from Miocene fossil deposits in Oregon. The valve margin of E. nicafei is not expanded on the ventral side, as compared to E. reimeri and E. stoermeri. The valve apices are broadly rounded, while those of E. reimeri are more acute and those of E. stoermeri are more rounded.
