The ventral side of E. temperei is distinctly gibbous and apices are more rounded. The ventral side of E. nicafei is linear, while the ventral side of E. yellowstonianum is slightly expanded. Encyonema latum has a lower stria density, at 6-8 in 10 µm in the central, dorsal striae. Encyonema sinicum was described from China, and has not yet been verified in North America.
This diatom has been reported as Cymbella muelleri Hustedt, shown in Patrick and Reimer 1975 (Spaulding et al. 2010).
