Encyonopsis descriptiformis has lanceolate valves with rostrate to apiculate apices. The central area of E. descripta var. asymmetrica is also large and rounded, but distinctly asymmetric. Encyonopsis czarneckii, E. dakotae, and E. medicinalis have smaller, asymmetric central areas.
