Gomphonema ventricosum is larger, has a broader headpole and has distinctly punctate striae. Gomphonema manubium is more robust, with a much broader axial area and higher areola density than G. mehleri. Gomphonema reimeri has a more lanceolate valve outline, in contrast to the inflated center of G. manubrium.
