The valves of N. recens differ from N. erifuga by the straight central raphe ends and generally wider valves. Navicula lanceolata has deflected central raphe ends, larger valves, and a larger central area. The valves of N. cari are more linear in shape. Navicula cari also has more radiate striae and denser areolae within each stria. Navicula eileeniae is smaller and has a higher stria density.
