Navicula rhynchocephala has narrower valves, striae with finer, more closely spaced areolae, and a preference for fresher waters. Navicula rhynchotella is similar to large lentic forms of Navicula trivialis with subcapitate poles, from which it may be distinguished by its much coarser areolae. Navicula expecta has more elongate valves with nearly parallel sides.
