Nitzschia alpina and N. perminuta have fibulae that are evenly spaced through the median. Nitzschia hantzschiana has wider valves (3-4 µm) and lower stria and fibula density. Nitzschia frustulum has narrower apices and a lower stria density. Nitzschia fonticola, N. incognita, N. oregona and N. liebetruthii all have lanceolate to linear-lanceolate valves.
