Identification

Description

Valves are rhombic-lanceolate with convex sides and subcapitate to capitate ends. The axial area is broad and lanceolate with ghost striae sometimes visible. The central area is a wide fascia. The raphe is straight and lateral, with expanded proximal ends deflected in the same direction and distal ends forming ?-shaped hooks. The striae are slightly curved throughout, transitioning from radiate at center valve to divergent at the apices.

Autecology

Pinnularia brauniana is widespread throughout North America and Europe. This species prefers slightly acidic ponds that are oligotrophic to dystrophic (Lange-Bertalot et al. 2017, Siver et al. 2005).
