Fragilaria vaucheriae has wider valves and a unilaterally expanded central area. The central area of Synedra rumpens is a transverse fascia that spans the entire width of the valve. Areolae of F. vaucheriae and S. rumpens are much finer and more difficult to resolve than those of S. famelica.
