I recently discovered the website, Observation of Diatoms, created and maintained by Thomas Harbich. The site is a wonderful addition to information-rich web resources on diatoms.

Thomas gives helpful, practical guidance on the cultivation of diatoms. He grows diatoms in culture and then "follows them around" through the microscope. His observations are recorded on video in clips that are posted across the pages of the website. For me, these are the most fun diatom videos I have seen! As Thomas investigates diatom motility, he shares ideas, hypotheses, and conclusions based on his observations.

The techniques, approaches, images, and references of this website make great resources for students, hobbyists, and professionals. The site also includes a comprehensive list of literature concerning diatom motility.

Diatoms of North America is running a fundraising campaign to keep the servers in operation. We need you to reach our $25,000 fundraising goal.

If you use and appreciate DONA, make your DONAtion today.
