The International Society for Diatom Research promotes the study of marine, freshwater, modern, and fossil diatoms across the wide range of disciplines of biology, geology, paleoecology, cell metabolism, cell biology, metabolomics, nanotechnology, forensics, systematics, nomenclature, taxonomy, and biogeochemistry. Our society welcomes investigators from all disciplines and nations. The society:

  • holds biennial, international conferences
  • supports young scientists through the Young ISDR program
  • offers travel funding to attend conferences to students and members from select countries
  • publishes the international journal, Diatom Research
  • connects people around world to study the important roles of diatoms in ecosystems

International Diatom Symposium 2025 will take place 3-8 August, in Skukuza, Kruger National Park, South Africa. South Africa is a welcoming country with friendly people, a warm climate, and diverse natural life, offering visitors an unforgettable experience. The Kruger National Park is one of the largest conservation areas in southern Africa. It is the ideal venue to enjoy a combination of science and pleasure. You will have the chance to meet and talk to colleagues in an adventurous atmosphere and, who knows, you may have the opportunity to see the big five (elephant, rhino, buffalo, leopard and lion) as well as an abundance of amazing bird, insect and plant life.

Early Career Research Awards - The aim of the program is to support ECRs to undertake original projects focusing on diatoms, across all disciplines. The program will provide  funding opportunities to facilitate collaboration and networking. A series of informational webinars will be announced soon, sponsored by YoungISDR. The proposal submission date is 1 October 2025. By joining the society, ECRs are eligible to be considered for an award.
