The Association for the Sciences of Limnology and Oceanography (ASLO),
The International Society of Limnology (SIL),
The European Federation for Freshwater Sciences (EFFS),
The Freshwater Biological Association (FBA), and
The Society of Freshwater Science (SFS)

jointly reach out to their members with a letter of expression of joint support for Ukrainian researchers.

The ongoing conflict in Ukraine has been a source of deep preoccupation to many of us. On behalf of the ASLO board, I would like to express our solidarity and deepest sympathy with the people in Ukraine. ASLO and the listed partner societies are deeply concerned by the developments of the past weeks and the continued unrest. As international organizations hosting members from all around the globe, we jointly wish to expresses condolence and grief to families, friends and close colleagues who are affected. We hope that the deplorable actions against the Ukrainian people stop immediately.

Research to support the sustainable development of life on our planet is effective only by peaceful and respectful interactions among researchers, the general public, and politicians. Indeed, the ongoing crisis reminds us of the need for, and the potential fragility of, stability and peace in order to pursue the advancement of knowledge. ASLO and partner societies recognize the urgent need to support our Ukrainian research colleagues and we are grateful to SIL, who has shared with all of us a list of existing open-source directories and databases where offers for Ukrainian researchers can be registered (https://limnology.org/news/). As such, we invite ASLO members to contribute by adding opportunities for funding, technical support, or positions for Ukrainian researchers. We intend to demonstrate that the international scientific community is united to provide safe conditions for colleagues most affected by the war in the Ukraine.

We would also like to point out that Wiley, ASLO’s publishing partner for our society owned journals and publications, has made a generous donation in humanitarian aid as well as made all of their scholarly publications freely available to researchers and students from Ukraine. Their statement of support can be found here.

The crisis in Ukraine is a stark reminder that other armed conflicts and humanitarian crises are still ongoing around the world, with consequences for innocent civilians, our environment, and aquatic resources. ASLO stands in solidarity with people affected by conflict everywhere. As an international science society, it is imperative that we find mechanisms to support the critical work done by colleagues all over the world who work to protect the environment and advance knowledge.

Sincerely,

Roxane Maranger
ASLO President
