Workshop: Harmonisation of (sub)Arctic diatom taxonomy
Dates: 6-8 June 2023
Registration Deadline: 31 March
Location: Ecosystems and Environment Research Programme (ECOENV), University of Helsinki, Finland
Contact person: Kaarina Weckström

Workshop details

The workshop will be dedicated to integrating and agreeing upon a common taxonomy for Arctic sediment datasets. A key outcome of this workshop will be an outline of a taxonomic guide that includes descriptions of species morphology and ecology, images, and geographical distribution. This workshop will be hands-on and participants are encouraged to bring their own samples/slides. Microscopes will be available.

This workshop is the 2nd in the series of 4 planned MARDI (Marine ARctic DIatoms) workshops, each of which builds on the previous workshop and plays a crucial part in achieving the overall MARDI goals.

Preliminary program

Workshop runs Tuesday 6 June 09:00 through Thursday 8 June 12:00. Discussion topics and activities:

  • Status of pan-Arctic diatom database: presentation of different datasets and taxonomic issues
  • Problematic taxa and challenges in Arctic marine diatom taxonomy
  • Sample preparation and counting methods
  • Laboratory visit
  • Multiple microscope sessions

    Financial Support

Funding to cover accommodation, breakfasts & lunches, and (limited) travel expenses is available thanks to financial support from PAGES to the MARDI workshop. Early-career researchers will be prioritized if the demand for support exceeds the available funding.
