I am seeking a highly motivated and hardworking individual with an interest in aquatic ecology to undertake M.Sc. studies examining multi-century environmental change and the impacts of legacy and ongoing human stressors in Boreal Shield lakes. The successful candidate will commence in May or September 2025 in the lab of Dr. Liz Favot at Laurentian University in Sudbury, Ontario. The project involves examining microfossils in sediment cores to qualitatively and quantitatively assess shifts in oxygen dynamics and invertebrate communities over 200 years as lakes have responded to acidification, climate warming, and other landscape disturbances. Determining pre-disturbance chemical conditions and invertebrate diversity through this project is important to guide local and global restoration and conservation goals, such as “30x30”, and assess the resilience of the base of aquatic food webs to ongoing environmental change.
Qualifications:
• BSc in Biology, Environmental Science, or a relevant major, with at least an 80% GPA
• Foundational knowledge in limnology/aquatic ecology and experience in R is an asset
• Organized with excellent observation skills and attention to detail
• Ability to follow direction and protocols
• Excellent oral and written communication skills
How to apply: Please e-mail a cover letter detailing your motivation and research interests, (unofficial) transcripts, a resume/CV, and contact information for 2 references to Dr. Liz Favot with the subject line “Paleoecology MSc”. Applications will be considered as they are received. All applications will be reviewed, but only those invited for an interview will be contacted.
