Algal Taxonomist

Great Lakes Environmental Center, Inc. (GLEC) is recruiting highly motivated candidates for an experienced freshwater Algal Taxonomist in Traverse City, Michigan. Preference will be given to those who demonstrate experience and knowledge of diatom and soft algae samples with associated laboratory experience, including diatom cleaning and slide preparation, and soft algal sample handling and treatment. Process and analyze algae samples within a controlled laboratory setting; provide species level determinations of diatoms and phytoplankton using current nomenclature; prepare and carry out biological assessments and other related studies. Master’s degree in Biology or related field is preferred, with a working knowledge of MS Excel and Access, high resolution microscopy, and digital photography. Salary range is $55,000-$70,000 annually, and commensurate on experience and education.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Proficient in the identification of North American algae;
  • Knowledge of appropriate sample handling and preparation techniques;
  • Proficient reading and writing skills and the ability to follow protocols;
  • Experience using scientific literature;
  • Effective verbal and writing communication skills;
  • Excellent work ethic, ability to meet deadlines, and ability to work independently as well as in small groups.
