Description: Stephanodiscus species are a prominent component of lake phytoplankton which occur across diverse environmental gradients such as lake depth and trophic status. I will provide my knowledge on species identification gained using light microscopy for common and rare taxa observed in sediment cores and phytoplankton tows. In addition to my observations on taxonomy, I will highlight ecological niches for each taxon combined from our monitoring, research, and the greater body of scientific literature.

Target Audience: Taxonomists working in lakes or limnologists interested about the diatom component of the phytoplankton.
