The Iberoamerican diatom network and database

Description: The 2023 ISDR networking award “DiatomS mEEt Databases: resources and practices to enable large-scale ecological research (SEED)” aims to improve the quality of open-access diatom data for enabling large-scale ecological synthesis in Iberoamerican waters. In this talk I will emphasize the importance of building trust within a community of data generators and stewards to inspire the inspire the next generation of diatom ecologists who will create, share, and utilize regional and continental scale diatom counts. I will conclude by introducing the global neo-paleoecological database Neotoma as a proposed platform in SEED to maintain a minimum level of standardization (e.g., formats, units) and taxonomic consistency through assigning regional data stewards, while assuring a long-term data archiving.

Intended audience: Diatomists at any career stage researching ecology and paleolimnology of diatoms.

Diatoms of North America relies on the financial support of our user community. We aim to build our technical content by engaging diatomists at all levels and training the next generation. We need you to reach our 2025 fundraising goal of $25,000.
