A look inside the USGS Phycology Lab - harmful algal bloom research and more

Description: The USGS Phycology Lab conducts ecological research with a focus on harmful algal blooms in freshwater and coastal systems. We perform quantitative taxonomic analysis and culturing in-house. We collaborate with internal and external partners across disciplines to address topics such as spatiotemporal patterns and drivers of algal distribution, indicator species and ecological thresholds, successional patterns associated with HAB boom-bust cycles, linking species composition with toxin presence, testing toxin production of isolates, and harmonization of morphological and molecular taxon identification using a polyphasic approach.

Audience: Those interested in a broad overview of the techniques and approaches to algal ecology and harmful algal bloom research. In addition, this talk will be of interest to those seeking potential collaboration with the USGS Phycology Lab.
