The genus Eunotia
Description: The diatom genus Eunotia Ehrenberg is diverse in freshwaters worldwide, especially acidic, dystrophic or oligotrophic habitats. Morphological variability within species can challenge identification and enumeration. I will review the main characteristics that define Eunotia, discuss identification and description challenges, discuss the ecology of the genus, and explore some of the diversity of species in inland waters of North America.
Target Audience: This presentation will be directed at participants who know a little about diatoms, but are less familiar with the genus Eunotia, but want to know more. It will be of particular interest to students, researchers, and analysts working on freshwater habitats, especially acidic environments. All are welcome to attend, as the genus Eunotia is an interesting group of diatoms!
