Compare

Cymbella neocistula and C. proxima are smaller, and less that 25 µm wide. They also have higher areola density, more than 12 in 10 µm. Cymbella mexicana and C. janischii have a prominent stigma. The proximal raphe ends of C. lanceolata are hook-shaped, rather than expanded.
