Staurosirella martyi possesses a single porefield and larger valves that are more heavily silicified than those of S. pinnata. Staurosira construens var. venter is elliptical, only rarely oval, in valve outline. The areolae of S. contruens var. venter are not lineolate and the costae are broader.
