The first official meeting of the Phycological Research Consortium (PRC). was held May 11-15, 2015 at Iowa Lakeside Lab. The meeting consisted of oral presentations, research development workshops, and technical sessions. Participants shared information on professional resources, including the GLEON Network and Fellowship Program and the National Center for Faculty Development and Diversity.

Oral presentations:

Lee, S. Using long-term, inter-biome data to understand the effects of light and temperature variability on freshwater ecosystem metabolism.

Chraïbi, V. Resilience theory from the perspective of paleoecology.

Cassie, B. Last Glacial Maximum to Holocene sea ice decline in the Bering and Chukchi seas: A comparison of diatom and IP25 sea ice proxies.

Morales, A. M. Bicarbonate uptake could maintain cyanobacteria dominance in eutrophic lakes

Howard, K. L. An overview of silica isotopes and silica biogeochemistry in freshwater lake systems

Lee, S. Effects of contaminants on biofilms: amphetamine, antihistamine and salt.

Rushforth, S. Introduction to Ecology Program Library-EPL: software for enumeration of phycological data, development of taxonomic databases, and environmental reporting,

Technical sessions: • Freshwater Diatom Sampling and Processing Techniques • Microscopy of Live, Freshwater Epiphytic Diatom Communities • Introduction to the Taxonomy of Polar Marine Diatoms • Taxonomy and Current Systematics Workshops—Chlorophyta, Cryptophyta, Bacillariophyceae, Cyanobacteria • Taxonomic and Nomenclatural Review for a Science and Art Project in Collaboration with Science Center of Iowa

Collaborative session: • Using modern and preserved phytoplankton communities to evaluate management of an impaired lake in northwest Iowa

Stay tuned for information about the next PRC meeting, tentatively scheduled for May 2016. The call for oral presentation abstracts and registration information will be available on this website and on DIATOM-L. All with interests in phycology are welcome.
