This species is most similar to T. alata and T. bondei. Tursicola alata is easily distinguished by distinctive elevated marginal ridges on the valve face.
Tursicola bondei has generally smaller frustules, a single row of smaller pores on the valvocopulae, and a second incomplete row underneath. In valve view, the apices of T. bondei are broadly rounded.
