If I had a nickel for every time someone asked me what a diatom was...
Jonathan English recently graduated from St. John's College in Annapolis, where he studied the Great Books. He was a 2007 Hodson Fellow and studied the green algae genus Coleochaete at the University of Maryland. Since beginning work at the Academy of Natural Sciences, he has worked on the diatom genera Aulacoseira and Surirella, clarifying their morphology and taxonomy. Jonathan is interested in the taxonomy, phylogeny and ecology of diatoms, especially as they relate to global species dispersion patterns and ecological barriers.
