Paula Furey

I am a freshwater ecologist, with expertise and interests that span community ecology, phycology, invertebrate biology, taxonomy, conservation, and restoration ecology. My research interests center on the ecology of lotic and lentic ecosystems, especially benthic communities and algal assemblages. I focus my research on trying to understand what shapes and controls the structure and function of biotic communities and ecosystems, on using ecology to find better ways to monitor, protect and restore aquatic ecosystems, and exploring the taxonomy, biodiversity, and ecology of freshwater algae. I am particularly fond of algae and some of my current research examines the biodiversity, ecology and taxonomy of the acidophilic diatom genus Eunotia, the interesting algal world from wet-walls, and the variation in and controls on diatom assemblages (especially the Epithemiaceae) along river networks.
